This was the second NZ performance poetry tour I have produced. Building on the success of my own performances in 2015, I invited Sara Hirsch, former UK Slam Champion, to NZ in 2016. I set up seven performance dates, as well as a few workshops and a week teaching at NYDS.
Visiting smaller towns is essential to keep building audiences. I am very interested in the ways touring performers can plant seeds of inspiration, and then how those seeds can be nutured into a dynamic, locally run scene. Sara's performances in Whakatane, Hastings, Dunedin and Palmerson North were specifically important to keep building interest in spoken word. More information about the tour can be found on Sara's blog and also on the Apples & Snakes website. The tour was supported by Apples & Snakes, as well as the British Arts Council.
